Flinders Private Hospital contacted Quality Energy to investigate a harmonic pollution issue that was causing critical hospital equipment to shut down.
The ProblemA high level of harmonic voltages were detected within the hospital’s cancer clinic, causing sensitive medical imaging equipment in the clinic to malfunction. The harmonics were generated by the variable speed drives that control the hospital chillers and these harmonics were then filtering through the hospital’s entire electrical infrastructure.
The ConsequencesDuring hot days, when the chillers at the hospital was running at more than 60 per cent, the Total Harmonic Distortion of the Voltage (THDV) increased to well above the electrical code, and more than the level that sensitive electrical equipment can handle. As a result, the imaging clinic had to shut down on hot days due to equipment malfunction.
The SolutionQuality Energy team conducted an in-depth power quality study and installed a 400Amp Active Harmonic Filter. Despite the urgency of this project, Quality Energy were able to deliver the project in a timely manner because we assemble our systems locally.
This project ensures Flinders Private Hospital’s cancer clinic can continue to operate and the hospital can continue their critical lifesaving work.
