300A explandable active harmonic filter designed and manufactured by Quality Energy
AVL had solar installed at the end of 2021 and needed grid approval to connect. In order to ensure their switchboard was compliant, Quality Energy were engaged to obtain and analyse data to identify power quality issues. The analysis found poor power factor and harmonics were present in the power supply and a 450kVAr PFC and 2 x 400A AHF's were installed.
Last year, AVL wanted a different switchboard monitored in another part of the production facility to ensure compliance. The monitoring data showed a power factor of 0.90 and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) at 41%.
An additional 400kVAr Power Factor Correction unit and expandable 100A and 300A Active Harmonic Filters were designed, custom built and installed. The flexibility with expandable AHFs allows AVL to add more machinery and additional AHF modules to be installed if required.
The risk to equipment being damaged has now been significantly minimised with the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) reduced from 41% to 8%.
Power Factor has now been improved from 0.90 to 0.99. This has reduced electricity demand from the grid and resulted in electricity and carbon emission savings for the winery.
