Australian Vintage Limited (AVL), one of Australia’s largest wine producers, engaged Quality Energy in 2021 to ensure switchboard compliance for a new solar system's grid approval. Our analysis revealed poor power factor and harmonics in the power system, leading to the installation of custom manufactured of a 450kVAr Power Factor Correction (PFC) unit and 2 x 400A Active Harmonic Filters (AHF).
Last year, monitoring of another switchboard at AVL revealed a power factor of 0.90 and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) at 41%, prompting the design, manufacture and installation of an additional 400kVAr PFC and expandable 100A and 300A AHFs. The modular AHF design allows AVL to seamlessly scale as their operations grow.
In 2016, CitiPower/Powercor introduced a kVA network tariff for medium to large business customers, requiring them to pay for apparent power (kVA) instead of real power (kW). Due to inefficient electrical systems and a poor power factor, the University of Melbourne experienced higher electricity costs, as they were charged based on peak demand. Following an extensive tender process, Quality Energy was awarded the contract to design, manufacture, and install Power Factor Correction equipment, which is still going strong today.
Sugar Australia deliver over 500 Tonnes of refined sugar each year to the industrial, foodservice and hospitality industries. Their energy provider and on-site engineers identified the equipment used to process the sugar was causing the company to have poor power factor, resulting in high demand charges on their electricity bills. Sugar Australia contacted Quality Energy to provide customised Power Factor Correction units and a Static Var Generator to reduce demand charges and ensure compliance.

This beautiful solar system is producing more renewable energy that estimated. For over 5 years, the Caroline Springs College has had the benefit of over 63MWh generated and our calculations show it has saved them a total of 440 Tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to 7,277 tree seedlings grown for 10 years) and approximately $75k!
After an electricity retailer identified their customer had poor power factor, they approached Quality Energy for a solution. Quality Energy discovered that an existing aged power factor correction unit was in poor condition and not performing as expected, resulting in high demand charges for the Queensland manufacturer. An old solar PV system on the warehouse rooftop was damaged by a storm and needed to be replaced, so Quality Energy installed a new 99.6kW commercial solar system. Highpoint Shopping Center has over 450 different businesses sharing a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Newly installed chillers were creating harmonics in Highpoint's electrical system, which can potentially cause equipment malfunction, overheating and hardware damage, as well as taking the electrical system outside of the electrical network code. Quality Energy were engaged to customise a solution using Active Harmonic Filters to reduce harmonics to acceptable levels.
