Flinders Private Hospital contacted Quality Energy to investigate a harmonic pollution issue that was causing critical hospital equipment to shut down.
It was identified that harmonics, generated by variable speed drives that control the hospital's chillers, were filtering through the hospital's entire electrical infrastructure. They affected sensitive hospital imaging equipment used in their cancer clinic and caused it to malfunction, forcing the clinic to shut down on hot days.
The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) was at a level well above electrical code.
Quality Energy conducted an in-depth power quality study and recommended installng a customised 400Amp Active Harmonic Filter to mitigate the existing voltage harmonic levels of 9.35%.
Despite the urgency of this project, Quality Energy were able to deliver the project in a timely manner because we manufacture our systems locally.
This project ensures Flinders Private Hospital’s cancer clinic can continue their critical lifesaving work.
The installation of an Active Harmonic Filter reduced the harmonic levels 89% and the clinic can now operate on hot weather days, without having to turn their patients away.
Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is now well within the electrical code and equipment has protection to ensure longevity.
