When CitiPower/Powercor moved to a kVA network tariff for medium to large business customers, the University of Melbourne's electricity bills increased significantly. Their inefficient electrical systems and poor power factor meant that when their demand for electricity was high, they were charged for that peak demand portion across the year.
They invited Quality Energy to tender for the installation of Power Factor Correction equipment to improve their power factor and increase efficiencies in the electrical systems.
After an extensive tender process, Quality Energy were awarded the contract to design, manufacture and install 26 low voltage Power Factor Correction (PFC) units.
The PFCs ranged from 62.5kVAr through to 400kVAr and were installed at locations identified as running with poor power factor.
With an improvement in Power Factor, from levels of between 0.60 and 0.80 (60-80% efficiency), to a much more efficient 0.99 (99%), the University of Melbourne saw a huge reduction in their demand of over 900kVA.
The improved Power Factor and increased efficiencies resulted in a decrease of energy costs of over $93,000 per annum. ROI was projected to be 3 years and provided a Rate of Return of 33%!
And the best part? The equipment is still going strong today.
